How do you get a dead person off of mailing lists?
Posted by: admin : Category: mailing lists
My father-in-law has been dead for over 7 years, yet we are still getting mail for him. How do we get him off of these lists?
If there is a postage paid envelope in the mailing, use it. Send the entire contents of the mailing back and write "DECEASED 2001" on the order blank or whatever. Or, just draw a line through his address and write the same thing on the front of the envelope.

Oh that just means that he really isn’t dead…

It will depend on the type of mailing list, if it’s something official, eg banks, or somewhere else that he had business dealings with, they may require a copy of his death certificate sent to them by a member of his immediate family or the executor of his will.
Other places may be able to simply remove him from their mailing list by placing a phone call to their customer service areas. Unfortunately though, if he publicly listed his details elsewhere, there may still be the occasional thing that slips through as companies often purchase lists for marketing purposes, and his name may come through on those lists if he signed up for things in the past that inadvertently recorded his details.
Here in Australia, you can add yourself to the Do Not Mail service, which is available at http://www.adma.com.au, which will remove a name from all lists accessed by some 500 banks, insurance companies, etc. I believe that this though takes 30-45 days to take effect.
If you’re from anotehr country elsewhere, I’d be looking to see if there is a similar kind of service that you can register his name for.
